Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for a personal meeting aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between their nations. In a letter addressed to Putin, Zelensky emphasized the need for a fair and dignified conclusion to the war, asserting that guarantees against future aggression are essential.
Zelensky expressed concern that the United States is currently focused on issues related to Iran, suggesting that it is inappropriate to wait for Washington’s attention to shift back to the European conflict. He stated, “Ukraine proposes to end the war in a format between us and you. I invite you to meet.”
He recalled that Russian representatives had previously suggested he travel to Moscow, but he indicated that after 26 years of strained relations, neither Ukrainian nor Russian leaders should meet in each other’s capitals. “Leaders always resolve key issues. I propose we determine a meeting point,” he noted.
Zelensky also referenced past promises made by Russia during a summit in Anchorage, highlighting that Ukrainian and European issues are not effectively addressed in Alaska.
In addition, he suggested the possibility of involving other participants in the bilateral discussions.
Regarding a ceasefire, Zelensky stated that diplomacy must begin at the front lines. He proposed a complete ceasefire during negotiations, describing it as standard practice supported by current circumstances surrounding Iran. He argued that establishing a genuine silence is the best way to initiate dialogue.
Furthermore, Zelensky indicated that the United States could facilitate monitoring of the ceasefire. He also confirmed Ukraine’s readiness for a prisoner exchange on an “all-for-all” basis, suggesting that this could serve as a positive precursor to ending the war.
In contrast, Putin had previously stated in May that if Zelensky wished to meet, he should come to Moscow. He also mentioned the possibility of a meeting in a third country, but only if final agreements on a peace deal were reached.
