The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the release of a new commemorative coin to mark the centenary of Symon Petliura’s death, a prominent figure in the early 20th-century Ukrainian national liberation movement.
This year marks 100 years since Petliura, a key political and military leader who served as the head of the Directory of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Chief Ataman of the Ukrainian People’s Army, was killed. The bank highlighted Petliura’s contributions to the struggle for Ukrainian independence and statehood, underscoring the significance of the coin’s issuance.
The commemorative coin is valued at 2 hryvnias. Its obverse features a stylized portrait of Petliura against a mirrored background, accompanied by an image of a military insignia from his uniform in the form of a branch on the left.
The reverse side showcases an artistic composition that incorporates the symbols of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, with a trident representing a shoulder insignia from 1919 at the center. Surrounding this are the words “100th Anniversary of Symon Petliura’s Memorial Day” along with a wreath made of elements from the Ukrainian People’s Republic’s charter.
The design was created by artist Alisa Ivanova, while the sculptor responsible for the coin is Volodymyr Atamanchuk.
The total mintage of the commemorative coin will be up to 50,000 pieces, packaged as souvenirs. The National Bank has indicated that the coin will be available for purchase starting May 26 through its online numismatic shop and via distributing banks. Details about the sales will be announced on the banks’ websites.
