Russia Deploys New Homemade Rocket System on the Frontlines

Russian forces have reportedly begun using a new homemade multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) known as the “Cultivator,” developed from a ground robotic complex. This system integrates a mobile platform with aviation rocket blocks for enhanced firepower.

According to Russian media, the Cultivator is being operated by a specific drone unit known as “Burevestnik.” The setup features a combination of a ground platform and UB-16-57 aviation blocks, designed to launch unguided S-5 rockets.

Each block can fire 16 unguided S-5 rockets, allowing for a total salvo of 32 rockets. Reports from Russian sources indicate that the effective firing range of the system is approximately 2 kilometers, with a maximum range of around 4 kilometers.

The limited firing range necessitates that the Cultivator be positioned closer to the front lines, increasing its vulnerability to drone attacks. In response, Russian forces are reportedly using camouflage nets and protective structures to mitigate the risk from FPV drones, a tactic that may also be applied to the Cultivator.

This development is not isolated, as similar homemade MLRS systems have been documented previously, including projects utilizing UB-32 blocks and the “Voloshka” mortar. Additionally, Russia has unveiled the BTR-22 armored personnel carrier, which features the “Balista” combat module and an automated fire control system.

Investigations have revealed that the Geran-2 drones used by Russian forces contain a significant number of foreign components, including parts manufactured in the United States, China, and various European countries.

In the context of ongoing negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, discussions have included the establishment of a demilitarized zone in the Donbas region. This proposal aims to create an area free from military units from both Ukraine and Russia, viewed as a potential mechanism to reduce tensions and military presence in the area.

Recent trilateral talks involving representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia in Geneva have shown some progress in discussing the parameters for a ceasefire. Outcomes from these consultations have indicated a degree of alignment on approaches to halt hostilities and subsequent steps toward stabilizing the situation.

The introduction of the Cultivator MLRS by Russian forces marks a significant development in their military capabilities. This system's design reflects ongoing efforts to adapt and innovate in response to battlefield conditions, while negotiations for a demilitarized zone continue amidst the conflict.
