On the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed grave concerns about the ongoing risks posed by Russian drone activity near the site. He highlighted that the world is once again facing the threat of a technological catastrophe.
Zelensky took to Facebook to remind the public of the catastrophic explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant’s fourth reactor 40 years ago, which released substantial amounts of radioactive materials into the environment. He noted that hundreds of thousands of individuals have been dealing with the aftermath of this disaster for years.
To contain the radiation, a sarcophagus was constructed over the damaged reactor, and later, over 40 countries contributed to building a safe confinement structure to prevent further incidents. These structures are crucial for protecting against radiation emissions and contamination, and their maintenance is vital for global safety.
However, Zelensky warned that the ongoing conflict instigated by Russia is putting the world at risk of another disaster. He pointed out that Iranian-made drones are frequently flying over the Chernobyl site, with one reportedly striking the confinement structure last year.
The President emphasized that the international community must not allow this form of nuclear terrorism to continue. He stated that the most effective response is to compel Russia to cease its reckless attacks.
President Zelensky marked the Chernobyl disaster anniversary by warning of renewed threats from Russian drone activity. He called for global action to prevent further nuclear risks associated with the ongoing conflict.
