Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the European Union to establish its own ballistic missile defense systems and enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. This statement follows a series of extensive missile strikes by Russia on May 18, which resulted in significant destruction across eight regions of Ukraine.
Zelensky reported that the city of Dnipro and its surrounding areas were targeted for over six hours, with missile strikes damaging residential buildings and critical energy infrastructure. Additionally, the port city of Odesa experienced a drone attack, where one drone struck a vessel registered to China.
“The Russians could not have been unaware of the ship’s identity in the sea. Overall, there were damages in eight regions, and as of now, dozens of injuries have been reported across the country, including children,” Zelensky stated.
During the night assault, the Russian military launched a total of 22 missiles of various types, including ballistic and cruise missiles, alongside 524 strike drones. Zelensky emphasized the need for robust defense measures against such attacks.
“In many border and frontline communities, alarms continue to sound, but wherever the security situation allows, our services are operational. Russia relies on ballistic missiles to target civilians, which is why we must ensure reliable protection in Europe against these threats,” he added.
He reiterated the urgency for Europe to create its own ballistic missile defense systems to become self-sufficient in countering these threats. Zelensky also stressed the immediate need for Ukraine to enhance its own air defense systems.
“This week is dedicated to working with partners to strengthen the protection of lives. I thank everyone who is already collaborating with Ukraine on this matter,” he concluded.
On the night of May 18, the Russian military conducted a large-scale attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region using missiles, drones, artillery, and aerial bombs. Areas affected included Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol, and several surrounding districts, resulting in 26 reported injuries. In response to the attacks, Ukrainian Railways announced changes to the schedules of several trains.
In Odesa, an 11-year-old boy and a 59-year-old man were injured due to the drone strikes, which also damaged several residential buildings. Furthermore, the Russian military targeted a Chinese commercial vessel in the Black Sea during the night.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the Russian military launched 22 missiles and 524 Shahed-type strike drones, including models named “Gerbera,” “Italmas,” and imitation drones known as “Parody.” Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept four missiles and 503 drones during the engagements.
In response to recent Russian missile strikes, President Zelensky has urged the EU to develop its own ballistic missile defense systems and strengthen Ukraine's air defenses. The attacks resulted in significant damage and injuries across multiple regions, highlighting the ongoing security challenges faced by Ukraine.
