Zelensky Sends Open Letter to Putin, Urging Public Accountability for War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has explained his decision to send an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for a public response regarding the ongoing conflict. In an interview with Sky News, Zelensky stated that the open nature of the letter was intended to compel Putin to address the situation transparently.

“I sent an open letter because I do not know if he will read it or not. An open letter means he has to respond to what is important for his society,” Zelensky remarked. He criticized the Russian public’s perception of the war, suggesting they live in a distorted reality where they believe they are not the aggressors and are instead protecting Russian-speaking individuals.

Zelensky highlighted the challenges of communicating with the Russian populace due to Internet restrictions and other limitations imposed by the Kremlin. He expressed concern about maintaining support from the United States amidst the ongoing conflict.

“I sent him this open letter because no one understands where we are in this war. It was crucial for me that Americans do not forget about us. I understand there are many challenges in the Middle East, but this is the largest war in 80 years, the largest in Europe. We must stop it. Do not pause because of Iran or anything else,” he stated.

Prior to sending the letter, Zelensky noted that Putin had publicly claimed readiness for negotiations to end the war. However, he pointed out that Putin has often suggested that he does not believe Kyiv is prepared for dialogue.

“He has spoken about this publicly but claims he does not feel readiness from Kyiv. He always refers to the regime in Kyiv, which I think means me. But I would very much like him to stop these games and respond. If this is a public letter, he must reply. It is better to meet; it is better to stop this war, by the way, his war,” Zelensky added.

On June 4, Zelensky published the open letter to Putin, proposing a meeting to discuss an end to the conflict. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga characterized the letter as a serious and significant proposal for concluding the war, indicating it would be officially communicated through diplomatic channels.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the Kremlin had received the letter, but stated that Putin would review its contents at a later time. On June 5, Putin responded, stating he did not currently see the point in meeting with Zelensky. He had previously indicated that any meeting should be conclusive and aimed at signing an agreement, rather than negotiating terms for ending the war initiated by Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking public accountability for the war. He emphasized the importance of maintaining international support and criticized the misinformation surrounding the conflict in Russia.
