Zelensky Calls for European Involvement in Ceasefire Negotiations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the necessity for European leaders to participate in potential ceasefire negotiations, citing the broader implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine on continental security.

During a press conference in Tallinn alongside Estonian President Alar Karis, Zelensky stated that achieving a ceasefire should be the initial step toward lasting peace. He argued for a summit involving Ukraine, Russia, and European nations, along with the United States, to facilitate discussions.

“For a ceasefire to be effective, I believe it is better to have a meeting at the leadership level. Who? Certainly Ukraine, Russia, and definitely Europe. Ideally, Europe and the United States. Why Europe? Because we are in Europe. That is the answer,” Zelensky remarked.

He pointed out that European countries are also affected by the ongoing conflict, particularly through drone attacks. Zelensky stressed the importance of ensuring a secure future for the continent, asserting that these nations should engage in negotiations as a crucial first step. He expressed Ukraine’s willingness to proceed but noted that Russia has yet to show similar intent.

In related developments, the German government has indicated that proposals from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine regarding negotiations with Russia will be discussed within the G7 framework, followed by a meeting at the European Union summit.

Additionally, leaders from Ukraine, the UK, France, and Germany convened in London on June 7 to deliberate on conditions necessary for establishing a fair and lasting peace.

President Zelensky has called for European leaders to engage in ceasefire negotiations, highlighting the regional impact of the ongoing conflict. Discussions among major European nations and Ukraine are set to take place as part of broader diplomatic efforts.
