U.S. President Donald Trump has landed in China for a significant meeting with President Xi Jinping, marking his first visit to the country in nine years. The leaders are set to discuss a range of critical issues, including trade relations and the contentious situation regarding Taiwan.
The primary focus of the discussions will be on trade, as both nations seek to address ongoing tensions stemming from Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Chinese goods. The U.S. administration aims to find a resolution to the trade war that has impacted both economies.
Another key topic will be Taiwan, which China views as a breakaway province. Trump previously indicated plans to raise the issue of a $11 billion arms package for Taiwan, approved by the U.S. in December but not yet implemented. This package represents the largest arms deal ever made with Taiwan.
In addition to trade and Taiwan, the leaders are expected to touch on broader geopolitical concerns, including the U.S. military operations in Iran and Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Initial meetings are scheduled to commence on May 14.
Upon his arrival, Trump was greeted by approximately 300 young people waving flags from both nations. The welcoming ceremony included a military honor guard and a military band.
Accompanying Trump are several prominent leaders from major U.S. technology firms, including:
- Elon Musk — CEO of Tesla and SpaceX;
- Tim Cook — CEO of Apple;
- Kelly Ortberg — former CEO of Rockwell Collins;
- Jensen Huang — President and CEO of Nvidia;
- Larry Fink — Chairman and CEO of BlackRock;
- Stephen Schwarzman — Chairman, CEO, and co-founder of Blackstone;
- Brian Sykes — Chairman and CEO of Cargill;
- Jane Fraser — Chair and CEO of Citi;
- Jim Anderson — CEO of Coherent;
- H. Lawrence Culp — Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace;
- David Solomon — Chairman and CEO of Goldman Sachs;
- Jacob Thiesen — CEO of Illumina;
- Michael Miebach — CEO of Mastercard;
- Dina Powell McCormick — President and Vice Chair of Meta;
- Sanjay Mehrotra — Chairman, President, and CEO of Micron;
- Cristiano Amon — President and CEO of Qualcomm;
- Ryan McInerney — CEO of Visa.
The Chinese government considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to assert control over the island. Conversely, Taiwan operates as a separate entity with its own constitution and democratically elected leaders.
President Trump has arrived in China for crucial talks with Xi Jinping, focusing on trade relations and Taiwan. The visit includes discussions on significant geopolitical issues and features a delegation of top U.S. tech executives.
