Authorities in Ukraine have apprehended a soldier from the Kharkiv region who allegedly deserted his unit and attempted to sell military-grade weapons. The arrest took place following an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigations (DBR).
The soldier reportedly left his military unit in March, taking with him issued firearms and other munitions. He then sought potential buyers for the weapons.
Investigators documented an attempt to sell an AK-74 assault rifle along with 17 F-1 grenades for a price of 150,000 hryvnias. The suspect was caught during the transaction.
In addition to the attempted sale, authorities conducted a search of the soldier’s residence, uncovering 174 rounds of 5.45 mm ammunition and a loaded magazine containing 41 rounds.
The soldier has been charged with desertion and illegal handling of weapons, which could result in a prison sentence of up to 12 years. He is currently in custody, with a court imposing a preventive measure of arrest, allowing for a bail option exceeding 800,000 hryvnias.
