Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska are set to arrive in Estonia on June 9 for an official visit. This trip aims to strengthen ties between Ukraine and Estonia amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
During his visit, Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Estonian President Alar Karis and Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš, as well as participate in the Northern Baltic Cooperation (NB8) summit. Discussions will focus on collaboration in defense industries, Ukraine’s aspirations to join the European Union and NATO, and issues surrounding European security.
President Karis emphasized the significance of Ukraine’s role in safeguarding European security, stating, “Ukraine has borne an extraordinary burden in defending European safety and has shown courage and resilience that deserves the support of the entire democratic world.” He noted that Zelensky’s visit comes at a crucial time for discussions on the future of European security.
Karis reiterated Estonia’s strong support for Ukraine’s EU membership, stressing the importance of a clear and reliable path for the Ukrainian people towards integration with Europe. He referred to the connection between Ukraine and the Euro-Atlantic security architecture as a strategic investment in European safety.
Following their meeting, Presidents Karis and Zelensky will hold a press conference, after which Zelensky will meet with Prime Minister Kariņš. The Estonian Prime Minister pointed out that the Northern European and Baltic nations, united under the NB8 format, have been steadfast supporters of Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s full-scale aggression. The total support from NB8 countries exceeds €42 billion, marking the highest per capita contribution globally.
“I am pleased that President Zelensky will join us. Assisting Ukraine is one of the main goals of Estonia’s presidency. We will discuss how to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, increase pressure on Russia, and enhance overall European security,” Kariņš stated.
The Ukrainian delegation will also include Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who is expected to meet with his Estonian counterpart, Margus Tsahkna. Additionally, a ceremony is planned to inaugurate two honorary consuls of Ukraine in Estonia, Allan Kaldoja and Siim Nellis.
Meanwhile, the First Ladies of Estonia and Ukraine will engage with representatives from the education and scientific sectors, participating in the signing of memoranda of cooperation between Estonian universities and the Global Coalition for Ukrainian Studies. They will also visit the Estonian Center for International Development Cooperation (ESTDEV).
President Zelensky's upcoming visit to Estonia underscores the ongoing collaboration between Ukraine and Estonia, focusing on defense, EU integration, and regional security. The discussions will highlight the support from Northern European nations amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
