Ukrainian Minister Links Drone Incidents in Latvia to Russian Electronic Warfare

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has stated that recent drone incidents in Latvia’s airspace were linked to Russian electronic warfare capabilities. This assertion follows discussions with Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže.

According to Sybiha, investigations revealed that the incidents were a result of Russian efforts aimed at deliberately diverting Ukrainian drones from their intended targets within Russia. He emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to collaborate with the Baltic states and Finland to prevent similar occurrences, including the involvement of Ukrainian specialists.

Sybiha outlined Ukraine’s commitment to enhancing the security of Latvia and other Baltic nations, primarily through effective resistance to Russian aggression and efforts to weaken the Russian military apparatus. He highlighted the importance of bolstering the airspace defenses of allied countries.

The incidents occurred on the night of May 7, when unidentified drones breached Latvia’s airspace from the direction of Russia. The Latvian Air Force reported the downing of two drones during this event.

In response, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the temporary chargé d’affaires from Russia to deliver a note of protest condemning the drone incidents on Latvian territory. Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds accepted responsibility for the failure to intercept the drones and indicated he would respect the Parliament’s decision regarding any potential resignation.

Ukrainian officials have attributed recent drone incursions in Latvia to Russian electronic warfare tactics. The incidents have prompted diplomatic protests and raised concerns over airspace security in the Baltic region.
