Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has criticized recent statements made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regarding potential attacks on Kyiv, labeling them a “brazen provocation” and indicative of Russia’s ongoing interest in prolonging the conflict.
Sybiha expressed his views during a press briefing at the “Ukraine-Africa: Past, Present, and Future Relations” forum on May 26. He emphasized that Lavrov’s remarks, made during a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, represent a public acknowledgment of Russia’s aggressive intentions.
“I view this as a brazen provocation. This is a public confirmation of Russia’s interest in continuing the war,” Sybiha stated. “It is difficult for me to accept that such threats can be made publicly against Kyiv.”
The minister urged international partners to respond decisively rather than merely advising their citizens to leave Kyiv. He called for a strong message to Moscow, asserting that such aggression should not go unchallenged.
Sybiha reiterated the need for clarity in the international response, stating, “Signals should not come from Moscow, but to Moscow.” He criticized the audacity of Russia in informing a leading global power about its disregard for peace efforts.
“What kind of audacity is it to directly inform the world’s most powerful country that you are ignoring their peaceful efforts and will strike Kyiv?” he remarked.
He underscored the importance of holding Russia accountable for its actions, emphasizing that the consequences of such reckless behavior must be understood. Sybiha expressed hope that the response from Ukraine’s allies would include additional support packages for the country.
In related developments, Lavrov had earlier conveyed to Rubio that the Russian military was beginning systematic strikes on targets in Kyiv, which allegedly support Ukrainian armed forces. On May 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced its intention to launch “consistent systemic strikes” on facilities related to Ukraine’s military-industrial complex and decision-making centers, urging foreign nationals to evacuate Kyiv as soon as possible.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has stated that these threats are intended to intimidate Western diplomats, but they do not expect such tactics to succeed.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned Russian threats against Kyiv as a provocation, urging international partners to respond firmly. He emphasized the need for accountability regarding Russia's aggressive actions.
