Ukrainian Foreign Minister Addresses Threats from Belarus

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has commented on potential threats of an attack on Ukraine from Belarus. His remarks were reported by a correspondent from Suspilne.

“Our rhetoric is always based on specific data and facts. It is proportional to the level of threats. In the event of any provocative hostile actions against Ukraine, we will respond decisively and firmly,” Sybiha stated.

He noted that Ukrainian intelligence centers are monitoring an “escalation of threats from Belarus” and that Ukraine is developing a political-diplomatic project to publicly communicate certain data regarding Belarus.

Context on Ukraine’s Concerns Regarding Belarus’ Involvement in the War

On May 20, President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council to discuss the likelihood of offensive operations by Russia from Belarus. Ukrainian forces are set to increase their presence in the Chernihiv-Kyiv direction.

Earlier, on May 2, President Zelensky mentioned specific activity along certain sections of the border between Ukraine and Belarus, indicating that Kyiv is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond if necessary.

On April 17, the President expressed concerns that Russia is attempting to draw Belarus into the conflict, highlighting the construction of roads and artillery positions in the border areas of Belarus aimed at Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials are raising alarms about potential military threats from Belarus, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasizing the need for a firm response to any provocations. The situation is being closely monitored, particularly following recent discussions about Russian military activities in the region.
