Ukraine and Romania Strengthen Air Defense Cooperation Following Drone Incident

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Romanian leader Nicolae Ciucă regarding a Russian drone that crashed into a residential building in Galați on May 29. The two leaders agreed that Ukrainian experts would assist in enhancing Romania’s air defense capabilities.

In his evening address, Zelensky stated, “We agreed with Nicolae that Ukraine will support Romania in this situation—our teams, our military, and our specialists will work to strengthen air defense. By supporting each other now, we are strengthening our joint positions.” He emphasized the ongoing communication between Ukrainian forces and Romanian leadership to discuss further collaboration.

Zelensky added, “We will maintain constant communication with Romania and will continue to work together to protect lives from all potential Russian threats.”

Details of the Drone Incident in Galați

On the night of May 29, during a Russian aerial assault on Ukraine, a drone crashed into a ten-story building in Galați, igniting a fire that resulted in two injuries. Romania’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the drone was of Russian origin, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled the incident a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. President Ciucă suggested that the drone was likely shot down by Ukrainian air defenses.

In response, Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador for a discussion, and subsequently declared the Russian consul in Constanța persona non grata.

NATO also issued a statement condemning Russia’s actions, with Secretary General Mark Rutte maintaining communication with Romanian authorities. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, remarked that Russia’s war against Ukraine has “crossed another line,” expressing full solidarity with Romania and its people.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Cimpeanu indicated that the country is considering initiating consultations with NATO allies under Article 4 in light of the drone incident.

Following a Russian drone crash in Romania, Ukraine and Romania have agreed to enhance air defense cooperation. The incident has drawn condemnation from NATO and the European Commission, highlighting escalating tensions in the region.
