Recent assessments from U.S. intelligence agencies reveal that Iran has regained access to a majority of its missile bases and retains approximately 70% of its pre-war missile and launcher arsenal. This information, reported by The New York Times, has raised concerns about potential threats to American naval vessels and oil tankers operating in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
According to intelligence sources, Iran has restored operational access to 30 out of 33 missile sites located along the Strait. The assessments indicate that, despite varying levels of damage, Iran can utilize mobile launchers stationed at these bases, with some capable of launching missiles directly from their platforms. Currently, only three missile bases in the region remain completely inaccessible.
Furthermore, estimates suggest that Iran still possesses around 70% of its mobile launchers nationwide and maintains a stockpile of approximately 70% of its pre-war missile inventory. This arsenal includes both ballistic missiles capable of reaching other regional countries and a smaller number of cruise missiles intended for targeting closer land or maritime objectives.
Military intelligence has also reported that Iran has regained access to about 90% of its underground missile storage facilities and launch sites across the country, which are now classified as partially or fully operational. In response to these revelations, White House spokesperson Olivia Wailes reiterated Trump’s earlier claims that Iran’s military was defeated. She stated that anyone believing Iran had restored its military capabilities was either delusional or acting as a mouthpiece for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Wailes referenced a social media post by Trump, asserting that suggesting Iran’s military was in good shape amounted to treason.
The intelligence assessments regarding Iran’s military capabilities highlight implications for U.S. tactical decisions. Officials noted that when U.S. forces targeted fortified missile sites in Iran, the Pentagon opted to block most entrances rather than attempt to destroy the facilities and their missile contents entirely, due to limited supplies of bunker-busting munitions.
In related financial updates, the Pentagon has recently estimated that the ongoing conflict with Iran has cost the U.S. approximately $29 billion, surpassing the $25 billion figure reported to Congress two weeks prior. Additionally, The New York Times previously indicated that the U.S. had expended around 1,100 stealthy long-range cruise missiles during the conflict, depleting nearly its entire remaining stock.
