Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that Latvia and Lithuania have denied his aircraft passage through their airspace for an upcoming trip to Moscow. This statement was made during a Facebook video address.
Fico expressed confusion over the decision, emphasizing that it represents a restriction for a leader of a European Union member state. He intends to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Russia on May 9, an event that has drawn calls from European leaders to abstain from participation.
Last year, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged European politicians to boycott the Moscow festivities. Despite these calls, Fico attended the celebrations in Moscow in 2022, although he faced route issues after Estonia barred his flight from using its airspace.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico faces airspace restrictions from Latvia and Lithuania for his planned trip to Moscow for Victory Day celebrations. This situation raises questions about diplomatic relations within the EU, especially regarding participation in events that have been criticized by European leaders.
