Russian Forces Adapt Drone Tactics Near Pokrovsk Front

Recent developments on the Pokrovsk front have revealed a shift in how Russian forces are employing drone technology. According to Vladimir Polevyi, the communications chief of the 7th Airborne Assault Corps, Russian troops are now deploying technical personnel closer to the front lines while operators manage the drones remotely.

This tactical adjustment allows drones to take off from urban areas such as Myrnohrad and Pokrovsk, utilizing elevated positions to enhance their operational range. By keeping drone operators at a safer distance, often as far away as Donetsk, Russian forces aim to mitigate the risk of counterattacks.

“When the green light comes on, the drone is ready for use. The pilot is at a safe distance, for example, in Donetsk,” said Polevyi.

The proximity of Russian launch points to Ukrainian positions is striking, with distances often only one to two kilometers apart. In contrast, Ukrainian launch sites are significantly farther away, complicating their response times.

“A drone covers one kilometer in about one minute. The time for Russian forces to act is approximately one and a half minutes, while our response time is around 15 minutes. This basic math undoubtedly gives the Russians a considerable advantage,” Polevyi noted.

On April 15, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reported that the Russian army had intensified its offensive operations in response to changing weather conditions, with actions occurring nearly along the entire front line.

Earlier, on April 1, Syrskyi stated that the Pokrovsk direction remains the hottest point along the entire 1,200-kilometer active front. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on April 6 that Ukrainian counterattacks in the Huliaipole and Oleksandrivka directions have undermined Russian efforts in the Pokrovsk area and their spring-summer offensive.

The article outlines the evolving drone tactics of Russian forces near the Pokrovsk front, highlighting the strategic advantages gained by launching drones from urban areas while keeping operators at a safer distance. This shift has implications for the ongoing conflict dynamics in the region.
