On May 20, Russian forces launched an extensive aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying 84 strike drones between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the country’s air defense systems successfully intercepted 75 of these drones, which included various models such as Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, as well as imitation drones known as ‘Parody.’
Despite the defensive measures, Ukrainian military officials reported that six drones managed to hit their targets. This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks by Russian military forces, which frequently utilize a range of weapons, including strike drones, missiles, and rocket systems, to target urban areas and critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
Ukrainian authorities, along with international organizations, have classified these strikes as war crimes, emphasizing their deliberate nature. Legal experts and human rights advocates argue that such actions may constitute genocidal behavior. They point to statements from Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, who have questioned the existence of Ukrainians as a distinct ethnic group. This rhetoric is viewed as part of a broader strategy aimed at undermining Ukrainian identity.
Key indicators of genocidal intent include public calls for the destruction of Ukrainians, systematic attacks on critical infrastructure, and the targeting of individuals with pro-Ukrainian views in occupied territories. Furthermore, there are reports of efforts to eliminate Ukrainian culture, such as the removal of Ukrainian literature from libraries and the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.
The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, obligates member states to prevent and punish acts of genocide. Currently, 149 countries are signatories to this convention, which defines genocide as actions aimed at the complete or partial destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.
Under this framework, acts that can be classified as genocide include the killing of group members, inflicting serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately creating conditions calculated to destroy a group, and forcibly transferring children from one group to another.
Despite these allegations, Russian leadership continues to deny that its military is intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure, claiming that their operations are aimed at military objectives.
