Russian Drone Incident in Romania Raises Tensions Amid Ongoing Conflict

A recent incident involving a Russian drone in Romania has heightened tensions in the region, following its crash into a residential building in the city of Galați. Romanian President Nicușor Dan stated that the drone likely changed course after being struck by Ukrainian air defense systems.

President Dan explained to reporters that during its flight over Ukrainian territory, some drones were intercepted, and one, which was reportedly hit near the city of Reni, altered its trajectory and headed towards Galați. He emphasized that the responsibility for this incident lies with Russia.

The drone crashed into a ten-story residential building in Galați on the night of May 29, coinciding with a broader Russian aerial assault on Ukraine. The crash resulted in a fire, and authorities confirmed that two individuals sustained injuries.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense identified the downed drone as Russian. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the incident as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. Following the event, President Dan instructed diplomats to prepare a series of measures regarding Romania’s future relations with Moscow. Subsequently, Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Cîtu announced that the Russian ambassador had been summoned for discussions.

NATO also reacted to the incident, with Secretary-General Mark Rutte maintaining communication with Romanian authorities and condemning Russia’s actions. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked that the Russian war against Ukraine had “crossed another line,” expressing full solidarity with Romania and its citizens.

In light of the drone incident, Foreign Minister Cîtu indicated that Romania is considering initiating consultations with NATO allies under Article 4 of the alliance’s treaty, which allows for discussions when a member feels its territorial integrity is threatened. Additionally, Romania declared the Russian consul in Constanța a persona non grata.

The crash of a Russian drone in Romania's Galați has sparked significant diplomatic responses and discussions about regional security. Romanian officials have condemned the incident, attributing responsibility to Russia, while NATO and the European Union have expressed solidarity with Romania amid escalating tensions.
