EU Condemns Russian Drone Incident in Romania

The European Union has condemned an incident involving a Russian drone that struck a residential building in Romania on May 29, 2026. The statement, issued by EU foreign affairs representative Josep Borrell, expressed solidarity with Romania and those affected by the event.

Borrell emphasized that the incident is a direct consequence of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, asserting that Russia bears full responsibility for its actions that threaten the safety of EU citizens and regional stability.

According to Romania’s Ministry of Defense, the drone entered Romanian airspace and crashed onto the roof of an apartment building in the municipality of Galați, igniting a fire. Emergency services reported that two individuals required medical assistance, and around 70 residents were evacuated from the building.

The incident has raised concerns, particularly as Romania shares a border with Ukraine that spans over 600 kilometers. The Romanian authorities have previously reported incursions by Russian drones into their airspace amid ongoing military actions in Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg responded to the incident, reaffirming the alliance’s commitment to defend every inch of its territory. He reiterated NATO’s readiness to respond to any threats posed by the conflict.

In light of this incident, Romania’s Minister of Defense announced that two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter were deployed for surveillance in the area. The pilots were authorized to engage any drones that posed a threat.

President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, attributed responsibility for the incident to Russia and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that the drone could have been Ukrainian, suggesting that Russia is prepared to conduct an investigation if debris is provided.

Borrell reiterated the EU’s commitment to enhancing security measures for Romania and all member states, highlighting initiatives aimed at strengthening defense along the EU’s eastern borders. He stated that the EU would continue to develop strategies to address security challenges posed by ongoing violations of European airspace.

As the conflict in Ukraine persists, the EU aims to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions and diplomatic efforts, striving for a comprehensive and lasting peace.

The EU has condemned a Russian drone strike on a residential building in Romania, asserting Russia's responsibility for the incident. The Romanian government has responded with increased security measures and diplomatic actions.
