During the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin did not address the ongoing battlefield situation in Ukraine, instead asserting that Russia’s victory is unavoidable. This statement comes as Russian forces have reportedly made minimal operational advancements over the past year, according to a report from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Analysts noted that Russian troops captured Toretsk in August 2025 after a 14-month campaign, while Severetsk fell during a 41-month effort. Pokrovsk was claimed to have been fully captured by Russian forces in early December 2025, although this has not been officially confirmed by the Ukrainian General Staff. The map from DeepState indicates the city as occupied. Despite these territorial gains, Russian forces have not leveraged them for significant operational progress.
ISW’s analysis indicates that Russian troops have achieved minimal success in their spring-summer offensive of 2026 against Ukraine’s fortified defenses. Conversely, Ukrainian forces have reportedly experienced their most significant successes during the winter and spring of 2026, reclaiming more territory than what Russian forces secured in April 2026, including a substantial portion of Kupiansk liberated in November 2025 and over 400 square kilometers in southern Ukraine following a series of counterattacks.
Ukrainian counteroffensives in the south have created cascading operational and strategic repercussions for Russian forces during their spring-summer campaign in 2026. This has forced Russia to choose between defending against Ukrainian counterattacks or reallocating personnel and resources to priority sectors along the front line.
Additionally, ISW highlights that intensified Ukrainian strikes against Russian logistics, military equipment, and personnel since the beginning of 2026 have further diminished the capacity of Russian forces to conduct offensive operations across the front.
On the first day of a ceasefire declared from May 9 to 11, both Russian and Ukrainian forces continued limited offensive operations along the front lines. The report indicates that Russian troops utilized the ceasefire to rotate personnel, reinforce, reposition, and enhance logistical support, likely in preparation for forthcoming offensive operations.
Analysts have observed that Russian forces have repeatedly employed ceasefires for regrouping, personnel rotations, and logistical improvements.
According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, as of May 8, Russian military activity has intensified across nearly the entire front. The Pokrovsk direction remains the most tense, with Russia reportedly concentrating around 106,000 personnel in that area.
The situation on the battlefield in Ukraine remains complex, with Russia claiming victories while facing significant operational challenges. Ukrainian forces have regained territory and disrupted Russian logistics, complicating the latter's military objectives.
