North Korea to Deploy New Artillery Divisions Near South Korean Border by 2026

North Korea has announced plans to establish three divisions of new 155-mm self-propelled howitzers by the end of 2026, positioned near its border with South Korea. The artillery, capable of reaching targets over 60 kilometers away, poses a direct threat to Seoul, which is situated approximately 40 kilometers from the demilitarized zone.

This information was reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 8. During a visit to a defense facility on May 6, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was briefed on the production of these howitzers intended for deployment in a long-range artillery unit along the southern border.

The range of the new artillery exceeds 60 kilometers, although KCNA did not specify potential targets. Given that Seoul is home to nearly half of South Korea’s 51 million residents, its proximity to the border heightens concerns.

Kim emphasized that the new howitzer, alongside missile systems and multiple launch rocket systems, would provide a significant advantage in ground operations. He also instructed a review of the operational concepts for military deployment and equipment utilization.

On the same day, Kim inspected a new main battle tank and launch systems at other defense facilities. He asserted that 2026 would mark a period of unprecedented enhancement of North Korea’s defense capabilities.

North Korea's announcement of new artillery divisions near the South Korean border underscores escalating military capabilities and tensions in the region. The deployment of advanced weaponry raises significant security concerns for Seoul and its surrounding areas.
