New UK Defense Minister Appointed Amid Ongoing Global Tensions

Den Jarvis has been appointed as the new Minister of Defense for the United Kingdom, succeeding John Healey, who resigned earlier in the day. Healey cited disagreements with government plans on defense spending, which he deemed insufficient given the rising threats facing the nation.

Jarvis, a Member of Parliament for Barnsley North since 2011, previously served as the Mayor of South Yorkshire from 2018 to 2022. He was appointed Minister for Security in the Home Office in 2024, a role he held until his recent promotion. His military background includes service as an officer in the British Army’s Parachute Regiment from 1997 to 2011, during which he participated in missions in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

In a separate development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a document to formalize the end of the war with Iran may be signed in the coming days. Trump indicated that this signing could take place in Europe, with Vice President J.D. Vance present. He stated, “The documents are almost ready, so we’ll see. This should be completed fairly quickly.” This announcement follows Trump’s decision to cancel planned airstrikes against Iran, a move he attributed to the advancement of negotiations involving multiple parties.

Norway has committed 100 million Norwegian kroner to repair the protective structure over the fourth reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged by a Russian drone attack in February 2025. The announcement was made by Norwegian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Eivind Vad Petersson during a visit to Kyiv. The funds will be allocated for the restoration of the protective facility covering the reactor.

“The drone attack that occurred over the weekend serves as a serious reminder of the importance of nuclear safety in Ukraine. Russia’s offensive war harms not only the Ukrainian population and its critical infrastructure but also poses a threat to European and international security,”

Petersson stated. He emphasized Norway’s commitment to mitigating the risks of potential radioactive leaks and ensuring the safe operation of the Chernobyl facility.

Additionally, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported a missile strike on a Russian military facility in Sevastopol using the Neptune coastal missile system. This attack, which took place on the night of June 11, 2026, targeted storage sites for weapons and military equipment of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

“The systematic destruction of the enemy’s military potential deprives them of the ability to conduct offensive actions at sea and complicates their plans. Ukraine has demonstrated to the world that it can defeat the enemy at sea using modern asymmetric technologies, such as kamikaze sea drones and long-range missile systems,”

the Ukrainian Navy commented.

Den Jarvis has been appointed as the UK's new Defense Minister following John Healey's resignation. Meanwhile, Trump hints at a potential resolution to the Iran conflict, and Norway pledges funds for Chernobyl repairs amid ongoing military actions in Ukraine.
