New Hungarian Minister: A Journey from Blindness to Leadership

The recent Hungarian elections have ushered in a new government, with leader Péter Mádjár announcing his cabinet. Among the notable appointments is Vilmos Kataj-Nemet, who will head the newly established Ministry of Social Policy and Health. Kataj-Nemet, who is visually impaired, has a unique background as the only aikido master in Hungary.

Vilmos Kataj-Nemet was born in the city of Győr, located west of Budapest, but his family moved to the capital during his school years. Here, he underwent medical examinations for vision problems that emerged in childhood. Diagnosed with a hereditary condition known as retinal atrophy, he lost 97% of his sight by the age of 16.

Reflecting on his experience, Kataj-Nemet noted, “I had to abandon the well-trodden path for an uncharted one.” He recounted a moment of despair in a hospital when he considered jumping from a window but found inspiration in a chess game he had won against the odds, prompting him to persevere.

His interest in martial arts began in childhood, and after a violent encounter on the streets where he was attacked, he returned to training. In 2005, he earned a black belt in aikido and has since explored other martial arts, including Muay Thai. He remains Hungary’s sole aikido master, holding the rank of first dan.

Kataj-Nemet developed a self-defense system for visually impaired individuals called “White Sword,” which enables practitioners to assess an opponent’s height and position through touch, allowing them to respond effectively in emergencies.

His story gained national attention after being featured on HBO. Prior to his political career, he worked as a massage therapist and later as a lawyer.

In 2007, Kataj-Nemet graduated with a law degree from Péter Pázmány Catholic University, one of Hungary’s most prestigious institutions. His motivation stemmed from two key events: a legal battle against a store that had refused him entry with his guide dog and a desire to honor his late mother, who had been unable to pursue higher education due to her noble background during Hungary’s communist era.

After completing his education, Kataj-Nemet launched a private legal practice focused on equal opportunities. He emphasized that while he never felt limited in court, he faced significant accessibility challenges in other areas of life.

As Mádjár introduced Kataj-Nemet as the candidate for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Family, he highlighted his personal experience with disability and commitment to ensuring equal opportunities. Mádjár stated that Kataj-Nemet’s primary goal is to provide all citizens, regardless of their background, access to quality healthcare and education.

Kataj-Nemet joined the political party “Tisza” in 2024, marking his first foray into politics. His campaign focused on healthcare accessibility, transportation, and support for family businesses. He won a decisive victory in Budapest’s 9th district, securing over 60% of the votes against candidates from other parties, including Fidesz.

In an interview with DW, he expressed his dissatisfaction with 16 years of Fidesz governance, stating, “They humiliated and robbed everyone.” One of his objectives will be to investigate abuses committed by Fidesz during their time in power, particularly those affecting children.

Kataj-Nemet articulates his approach to life as a desire to live fully, stating, “I want to live in such a way that even if I die alone in a small wooden house in the woods, I can say that I lived, rather than passively waiting for better times.”

Vilmos Kataj-Nemet, Hungary's newly appointed Minister of Social Policy and Health, has overcome significant personal challenges, including severe visual impairment. His journey from martial arts practitioner to lawyer and now politician highlights his commitment to advocating for equal opportunities and social welfare.
