Moldova is exploring the establishment of an international framework to address the situation in Transnistria, as announced by President Maia Sandu during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on April 26.
Sandu indicated that discussions are ongoing with international partners, including the European Union, and emphasized that Moldova will play a central role in any decisions made regarding the matter.
During the conference, Sandu acknowledged Ukraine’s significant contribution to regional security by deterring Russian military forces from approaching Moldova’s borders. She stated,
“Ukraine is making the largest contribution by keeping Russian armies away from Moldova’s borders. This allows us to seek peaceful resolutions to the conflict, which we greatly appreciate.”
Transnistria, officially known as the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, is a self-declared state located within the internationally recognized borders of Moldova. The region occupies most of the left bank of the Dniester River and includes several settlements on the right bank. It shares a northeastern border with Ukraine, specifically the Odesa and Vinnytsia regions, and a southwestern border with Moldova.
Moldova is in discussions with international partners to create a mechanism for resolving the Transnistria conflict, emphasizing its own role in the process. President Sandu highlighted Ukraine's importance in maintaining regional security against Russian military presence.
