May 2023 has been reported as the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, according to a statement made during a United Nations Security Council meeting. Sanita Pavluta-Deslandes, Latvia’s permanent representative to the UN, provided this alarming update.
Pavluta-Deslandes highlighted that the first quarter of 2023 saw 190 attacks on medical facilities, including maternity hospitals. Additionally, over 200 educational institutions were either damaged or destroyed. The number of affected children has surged by 49%, according to UN data.
“Statistics for May will be even worse. Preliminary data indicates that May has become the deadliest month for civilians since April 2022. Among the so-called ‘legitimate targets’ of Russia were families mourning their deceased at funerals in Sumy,” she stated.
The UN reports that May 2023 has seen a significant increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine, with alarming statistics on attacks against medical and educational facilities. The situation underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
