Romania Condemns Russian Drone Incident as Serious Escalation

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned a recent incident involving a Russian drone that crashed in the city of Galați, describing it as a serious escalation by Russia. The ministry summoned the Russian ambassador to express its concerns regarding the violation of international law and Romanian airspace.

In an official statement, the ministry characterized the event as reckless and a significant breach of international norms. Romania has informed NATO allies, European partners, and the Secretary-General of the Alliance about the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging for expedited support in counter-drone measures.

The Romanian government emphasized its intention to take diplomatic actions and increase international pressure on Russia to cease hostilities. President Nicușor Dan has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare a series of measures aimed at addressing future relations with Russia, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

“I firmly state that full responsibility for this incident lies with the Russian Federation. What occurred today in Galați is a direct consequence of the aggression war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, and the irresponsible and indiscriminate manner in which Moscow employs these weapons systems near NATO borders, alongside systematic disregard for international law,” he remarked.

The President has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to present immediate actions to be taken regarding relations with Russia in light of this serious incident. Following his remarks, the Russian ambassador was summoned to the ministry.

“We have summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The security of Romania is our absolute priority,” the statement read.

On May 29, a drone crashed into a residential building in Galați, striking an apartment on the tenth floor. The incident resulted in an explosion, which subsequently caused a fire. Two individuals sustained minor injuries, and several residents required medical assistance. The building was evacuated as a precaution.

In response to the incident, the Romanian Air Force deployed two aircraft and a helicopter after detecting Russian drones on radar. The military had authorization to engage if necessary.

Romania has condemned a Russian drone incident in Galați as a serious violation of international law. The government is taking diplomatic measures and increasing pressure on Russia following the event, which resulted in injuries and property damage.
