Apple has announced significant improvements to its Shortcuts app in the upcoming iOS 27, incorporating advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. This enhancement aims to simplify the automation process, allowing users to create complex shortcuts through simple text prompts rather than intricate manual configurations.
During a recent presentation, Apple executives acknowledged that, despite the app’s powerful features, many users found the process of creating shortcuts overly complicated. “While this process is incredibly powerful, creating such commands can seem daunting,” stated Celcia Dantas, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Home Software at Apple.
The new version of the Shortcuts app addresses this issue by enabling users to input a straightforward text description of the desired automation. Apple Intelligence will analyze the natural language input, determine the task’s essence, and generate all necessary technical steps instantly.
One practical demonstration showcased how this technology could streamline everyday tasks. Users can now simply enter a request like: “Send a message to my partner when I leave work, including my estimated arrival time.” The artificial intelligence will autonomously construct a complex sequence of actions:
- Detect the moment the user exits the geographical location of their workplace.
- Reference the saved home address.
- Automatically launch Apple Maps to calculate the travel time, factoring in traffic conditions.
- Compose and send the final notification via the Messages app.
Moreover, users can easily modify existing shortcuts using either voice or text descriptions. For instance, to an already created command like “Leaving work,” users can simply add, or dictate, “…and then play my favorite podcast.” The AI will promptly integrate the new action into the existing algorithm, eliminating the need to reconfigure everything from scratch.
The updated Shortcuts app, featuring deep AI integration, is set to be released alongside the official launch of iOS 27 this fall.
