Intense Fighting Continues in Ukraine as Russian Forces Launch Multiple Attacks

Since the start of the day, Ukrainian forces have reported 196 combat encounters, with the majority of Russian assaults concentrated in the Pokrovsk direction, according to a summary from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In the Pokrovsk area alone, Russian troops executed 37 attacks, attempting to advance in regions such as Rodynske, Hryshyne, Vasylivka, Kotlyne, Udaine, and towards Hanniivka, Bilitske, Oleksandrivka, Shevchenko, Novooleksandrivka, Novohryshyne, Serhiivka, Novopidhorodne, and Novopavlivka.

Additionally, the Ukrainian command reported 20 assaults in the Huliaipole direction. Russian forces also targeted Ukrainian positions across several other fronts, including Northern Slobozhansky, Kursk, Southern Slobozhansky, Kupiansk, Lyman, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Kostiantynivka, Oleksandrivka, Orikhiv, and Prydniprovsk.

Data from the DeepState project indicates that May marked the first month since autumn 2023 in which the Russian military experienced a negative monthly growth in occupied territories, losing more land than it gained.

This trend is echoed by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which reported that over six months of intense assaults from December 2025 to May 2026 resulted in Russian forces gaining only slightly over 40 square kilometers. Analysts noted that Ukrainian forces have effectively halted the Russian advance during the spring-summer campaign of 2026.

On May 21, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated that Ukraine has significantly slowed the progress of Russian forces and is gradually regaining initiative on the front lines, attributing this shift to the efforts of Ukrainian troops and other factors, including the disabling of Starlink for the aggressor and an increase in medium-range drone strikes.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine sees heightened Russian military activity, particularly in the Pokrovsk region, while Ukrainian forces report a shift in momentum. Recent data indicates a decline in Russian territorial gains, suggesting a potential turning point in the conflict.
