European Nations Respond to Russian Threats Amid Ongoing Tensions in Ukraine

In a significant diplomatic move, the foreign ministries of Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands summoned Russian ambassadors following threats of renewed strikes on Kyiv. This action underscores escalating tensions in the region as concerns grow over the safety of civilians in Ukraine.

The German Foreign Ministry emphasized that attacks on hospitals, schools, and media offices in Kyiv, coupled with calls for the German diplomatic mission to evacuate, represent a serious escalation by Russia. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen remarked that the intensified Russian assaults on civilian infrastructure only strengthen the resolve of European nations to support Ukraine and increase pressure on the Kremlin.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry also summoned the Russian ambassador, with spokesperson Maciej Wewiór stating, “We cannot accept this. We clearly emphasize that if Russia claims it is conducting a ‘special military operation,’ the targets should be limited to military sites. The ambassador received a firm call from us to immediately cease unjustified and illegal aggression and adhere to international obligations and treaties.”

The European Commission’s spokesperson, Anita Hipper, confirmed that the EU had summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires, noting that despite the threats, the EU representation in Kyiv remains operational.

In response to Russia’s threats, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged all parties to refrain from escalating hostilities but did not provide specific comments regarding the potential evacuation of Chinese diplomats from Kyiv.

Context: On May 24, Russian forces launched a large-scale drone and missile attack on Kyiv, resulting in three fatalities and injuries to at least ninety individuals. Damage was reported across eight districts of the capital. Following this, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of attacking civilian targets and threatened to expand strikes on Kyiv and its infrastructure, indicating intentions to target Ukrainian defense industry enterprises.
