The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, has appointed Eugene Tomac, a Member of the European Parliament and his current advisor, as the new Prime Minister. This decision comes nearly a month after the resignation of Ilie Bolojan.
In a statement, Dan emphasized the significance of this appointment, stating, “I entrust Eugene Tomac with forming a government as Prime Minister. This is an important moment.” He acknowledged the concerns of Romanian citizens leading up to the May 2025 elections, highlighting fears regarding the potential questioning of Romania’s pro-Western direction and economic stability.
Dan noted that in June 2025, four political parties and national minorities formed a coalition to govern the country, which has since improved Romania’s international image and financial situation compared to the previous year. However, he pointed out that tensions have arisen among coalition parties, with party interests often overshadowing national priorities.
He remarked, “It seems normal to invite into the government those political forces against which Romanians mobilized a year ago.” Dan stressed the need for a Prime Minister who is independent of parliamentary parties, committed to maintaining financial stability and implementing necessary reforms.
“I have chosen someone independent of parties but with the necessary experience to engage with them, as consensus and political experience are essential,” Dan added, expressing his expectations for accountability from political parties.
In response, Tomac stated that he intends to present a team of specialists to the Romanian Parliament, emphasizing a technical rather than a political government. “I take on the mission to propose a professional government team that will work for the benefit of citizens. I aim for openness and sincere dialogue with all democratic and pro-Western political forces in Parliament to form a government with a unified agenda,” he said.
Eugene Tomac has been appointed as Romania's Prime Minister amid ongoing political tensions. His focus on a technical government aims to address national concerns while promoting stability and reform.
