On the morning of May 23, a drone entered Latvian airspace and crashed into Lake Dridzis in the Kraslava region, resulting in an explosion upon contact with the water. The Latvian police confirmed the incident, which was reported by local residents around 8:00 AM.
The crash site is located approximately 20 kilometers from the Belarus border and 50 kilometers from the Russian border. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of the explosion, and police officials have since recovered debris from the unmanned aerial vehicle.
According to the National Armed Forces of Latvia, their sensors did not detect the drone approaching Latvian territory, which is why no alerts were issued to the public. This incident comes amid heightened air alerts in Latvia and Lithuania over the past few days.
Ukrainian officials have indicated that drones have been entering Baltic states due to actions by Russian electronic warfare systems. Additionally, the foreign ministers of Lithuania and Estonia have accused Russia of deliberately redirecting Ukrainian drones into their airspace.
