Canada and Finland have reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in light of ongoing Russian aggression. This commitment was articulated in a joint statement following Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s visit to Ottawa on April 14.
The leaders of both nations emphasized their dedication to a rules-based international order and collective security. They pledged to enhance defense cooperation and invest 5% of their GDP in security and defense by 2035.
“We will continue to steadfastly support Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s aggressive war. Ukraine’s security is inseparable from European and Euro-Atlantic security,” the statement read.
To bolster their defense collaboration, Canada and Finland plan to improve information sharing, conduct joint exercises, and enhance interoperability between their forces. They will initiate negotiations on a Comprehensive Security Information Agreement aimed at strengthening data exchange and creating opportunities for both countries’ industries.
In addition to financial commitments, the two nations have agreed to combat hybrid threats, enhance societal resilience, and improve readiness in the Arctic and beyond. Their cooperation will also involve collaboration through the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats based in Helsinki.
Canada and Finland have solidified their commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity while enhancing their defense cooperation. Both countries plan to invest significantly in security and work together to address hybrid threats.
