British RC-135W Aircraft Intercepted by Russian Fighters Over Black Sea

A British RC-135W Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted by Russian fighter jets while operating over the Black Sea. The incident has prompted a response from the UK Ministry of Defence, which described the actions of the Russian pilots as “dangerous and unacceptable.”

The Royal Air Force (RAF) confirmed the event on May 21, emphasizing that the British aircraft was engaged in a routine mission. The RC-135W, equipped with a crew of up to 30 specialists, conducts electronic and communications intelligence for the UK and NATO. Defence Secretary John Healey stated that such incidents pose significant risks of accidents and escalation.

“This incident is yet another example of dangerous and unacceptable behavior by Russian pilots towards an unarmed aircraft in international airspace. Such actions create serious risks of accidents and escalation,” Healey remarked.

Despite the interception, the RAF maintained that the incident would not affect the UK’s readiness to defend NATO and its allies. Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, commander of the RAF, noted that the crew successfully maintained control and completed their mission despite the Russian interference.

“This incident illustrates the challenging environment in which our crews regularly operate, and the reckless and unprofessional conduct of Russian military aviation in the air. Despite the interference, the crew maintained control, adhered to safety protocols, and accomplished their mission in NATO’s interests,” he stated.

The UK government has officially reported the incident to the Russian embassy, reiterating that RAF missions are conducted in accordance with international law and are defensive in nature, supporting NATO’s collective deterrence efforts.

A British reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted by Russian fighters over the Black Sea, prompting a condemnation from the UK Ministry of Defence. The incident highlights ongoing tensions in airspace management and the conduct of military operations in the region.
