The Ukrainian government has stated it will not make significant decisions based solely on the recent leaks of tapes involving Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. This comes amid scrutiny over the authenticity of these recordings.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Ukrainian president, addressed questions regarding the potential resignation of Umerov, who appears in the leaked tapes. He emphasized that making fundamental decisions based on these transcripts would be unusual for the governance system. Podolyak noted that Umerov is actively seeking to verify the authenticity of the recordings and understand how they became publicly accessible.
Podolyak outlined several key points Umerov is investigating:
- How the transcripts were leaked to the public;
- The authenticity of the tapes;
- Whether the quotes have been taken out of context.
Furthermore, Podolyak expressed confidence in Umerov’s effectiveness as a negotiator with Middle Eastern countries and the United States, asserting that the scandal does not undermine Umerov’s negotiating position.
Regarding the lack of robust reactions from Western allies compared to past protests, Podolyak explained that the current situation involves ongoing investigations rather than political actions that would warrant immediate responses. He pointed out that the political landscape differs significantly from criminal proceedings.
“There is some information emerging as part of an investigation that has yet to lead to any judicial rulings, and we need to assess this politically. Any intervention at this stage would be seen as direct interference in the law enforcement process,” he stated.
Podolyak drew parallels with the United States, noting that neither European nor American officials would make official statements about ongoing investigations. He referenced the handling of the Epstein files, highlighting that officials do not intervene in the dissemination of information during such processes.
Earlier, the publication “Ukrainska Pravda” released new leaks from the tapes, suggesting discussions between Umerov and Timur Mindich regarding the potential sale of Fire Point, a company involved in producing rockets and drones, to investors. Umerov’s office has indicated that the authenticity of these tapes is still under investigation by law enforcement authorities.
Currently, Umerov is in the United States, where he has been meeting with American officials.
Ukrainian officials are scrutinizing the authenticity of leaked tapes involving Rustem Umerov, with no immediate decisions expected. The government emphasizes the need for thorough investigation before taking any action.
