Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the necessity for Europe to play a significant role in peace negotiations with Russia, advocating for a ‘strong voice’ to represent the continent in these discussions.
During a recent conversation with António Costa, the Prime Minister of Portugal, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the support extended to Ukraine and its citizens. He highlighted the importance of Europe’s involvement in the dialogue aimed at achieving peace not only for Ukraine but for the entire European region.
Zelensky pointed out that it is crucial to determine who will represent Europe in the negotiations. He remarked, ‘Of course, we also discussed Ukraine’s Euro-integration. We are ready to open clusters and discussed the schedule and necessary communication regarding this. I am grateful to all who support us.’
Recent reports indicate that European leaders have been considering the possibility of resuming negotiations with Russia. In this context, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as a suitable candidate from the EU to participate in potential discussions aimed at ending the conflict.
However, this proposal has been met with resistance in Germany, where officials have clarified that Schröder’s candidacy as a mediator between the EU and Russia is not under consideration.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has called for a robust European presence in peace negotiations with Russia, emphasizing the need for a clear representative. This comes amid discussions among European leaders about resuming talks, although proposals involving former German Chancellor Schröder have faced rejection.
