Trump Challenges Pentagon’s Decision on Troop Deployment to Poland

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly opposed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent decision to cancel the planned deployment of American troops to Poland. This move has sparked significant debate among lawmakers and military officials.

Last week, the U.S. unexpectedly called off the deployment of 4,000 soldiers to Poland. In response, Trump announced on Friday his intention to send 5,000 troops to the country instead.

During a phone conversation with Hegseth, Trump inquired about the rationale behind the cancellation. He emphasized that the U.S. should not treat Poland poorly, given its status as a close ally with strong ties to the White House.

The Pentagon’s decision has faced sharp criticism from both Republican and Democratic legislators, with some officials expressing surprise at the strategy being questioned by Germany rather than Poland.

Earlier in May, in response to comments from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Trump ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany.

The U.S. Department of Defense has assured that Trump and Hegseth are coordinating their decisions regarding military presence in Europe. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated, “President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are in constant communication and are aligning their actions concerning the movement of American troops in Europe.”

Prior to this cancellation, the U.S. had plans to deploy over 4,000 soldiers from the 2nd Armored Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, along with their equipment, to Poland. Some soldiers were already in the country, but the full deployment was ultimately halted.

The Pentagon maintained that the decision was not abrupt but rather the result of a “complex and multi-layered process.” The cancellation occurred amid budgetary constraints facing the U.S. Army. Poland had previously offered to host additional U.S. troops near its border with Russia following the announcement of the withdrawal of American forces from Germany.

The cancellation of U.S. troop deployment to Poland has led to a public disagreement between President Trump and Defense Secretary Hegseth. The decision has drawn criticism from lawmakers and highlights ongoing tensions regarding military strategy in Europe.
