Poland’s President Considers Revoking Honor from Zelensky Over Controversial Award

The Polish government is contemplating significant diplomatic repercussions following a recent decree by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This decree, issued on May 26, honors a Ukrainian special operations unit with the title “Heroes of the UPA,” a move that has sparked criticism from Poland.

In response, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated he is evaluating the possibility of stripping Zelensky of Poland’s highest state honor. He described this potential action as a matter of principle.

Nawrocki expressed his disapproval, stating, “I view this step very critically, and it shows Kyiv’s unpreparedness for EU membership.” His remarks reflect a growing concern in Poland regarding historical sensitivities and their implications for future relations.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also weighed in on the situation, emphasizing the need for both nations to focus on future cooperation rather than historical grievances. He remarked, “If we argue over the past, someone else will win the future. The President of Ukraine must finally understand this. So must the Poles. Before it’s too late!” His comments highlight the delicate balance both countries must navigate as they address complex historical issues.

Poland's leadership is reacting strongly to Ukraine's recent honor awarded to a military unit, which references a controversial historical group. This has led to discussions about revoking Zelensky's honors, emphasizing the need for both nations to prioritize future relations over historical disputes.
