Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a strong warning regarding the escalating tensions between Poland and Ukraine, describing the involvement of politicians from both nations in the conflict as a significant strategic error. His remarks were shared via his official social media account.
Tusk criticized those who are fueling discord between the neighboring countries, stating, “The involvement of Polish and Ukrainian politicians in this conflict is a strategic mistake that will harm both sides—economically, geopolitically, and reputationally. In politics, a mistake is worse than a crime,” he emphasized.
He also mentioned that he is actively engaged in discussions with Western allies to address the crisis and seek compromise solutions. “In negotiations with my European partners, I aim to minimize losses and reduce tensions. This is a challenging task,” Tusk concluded.
The diplomatic relationship between Kyiv and Warsaw has recently soured due to historical disputes. A key issue arose when Ukraine decided to honor a military unit with the name of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), prompting a severe diplomatic response from Poland.
In an unprecedented move, Polish President Karol Nawrocki rescinded the highest state award, the Order of the White Eagle, previously given to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In retaliation, senior Ukrainian officials, including Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Budanov, formally declined their Polish honors. Sybiha stated that Kyiv is prepared to respond reciprocally to disrespectful actions, asserting that Nawrocki is undermining bilateral relations and receiving applause from Moscow for his actions.
Due to the ineffectiveness of traditional communication channels, Tusk publicly urged leaders from both nations to engage in direct talks to prevent emotions from damaging their solidarity against Russia. Additionally, the trend of returning honors has reached Warsaw, where former MP Piotr Fogler returned his merit cross in protest against Nawrocki’s policies towards Ukraine.
