Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, has voiced his opposition to the idea of expediting Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. His remarks come in response to statements made by Hungary’s future Prime Minister, Peter Marki-Zay, who also expressed reservations about a swift membership process for Ukraine.
Sikorski confirmed that Poland shares Marki-Zay’s stance, emphasizing that Ukraine should undergo a comprehensive process of European integration similar to that which Poland experienced. He stated, “He speaks what is also our position. The European Commission has proposed the idea of accelerated membership. That will not happen. We believe Ukraine must meet all the requirements, just as we had to. Of course, there will be challenging negotiation chapters, such as agriculture and transport.”
This position reflects a cautious approach from Poland, which has historically supported Ukraine in its aspirations for closer ties with the EU. However, officials are now stressing the importance of meeting all necessary criteria before membership can be considered.
Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has aligned with Hungary's future Prime Minister in opposing the fast-tracking of Ukraine's EU membership. He insists that Ukraine must fulfill all integration requirements, similar to Poland's own EU journey.
