Poland has yet to deliver MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, with the country’s Deputy Defense Minister, Pawel Zalewski, citing a lack of interest from Ukraine in the jets’ current condition. In an interview with RMF24, Zalewski indicated that Ukraine prefers the aircraft to be upgraded for modern combat scenarios.
He also mentioned that discussions around the transfer have been complicated by the need for mutual agreements. Poland and Ukraine are currently negotiating cooperation in drone technology, and these talks remain ongoing.
Zalewski pointed to the recent election of President Karol Nawrocki as a factor contributing to the deterioration of bilateral relations. He stated that Nawrocki’s rhetoric, which has included anti-Ukrainian sentiments, is detrimental to Poland’s interests.
In response to comments from Polish politician Przemysław Czarnek, who suggested suspending military and financial aid to Ukraine, Zalewski emphasized that Poland’s security interests extend beyond its borders. He remarked, “The Polish security line is not the border between Poland and Ukraine; it is the Russian-Ukrainian front.”
