Norway Allocates $126 Million for Maritime Drone Development to Support Ukraine

Norway has announced a funding allocation of 1.2 billion Norwegian kroner (approximately $126 million) as part of its Nansen program, aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s maritime defense capabilities. This funding will support both the development of new maritime drones and the procurement of existing systems from Norwegian and Ukrainian manufacturers.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre emphasized that Ukrainian forces are currently employing maritime drones for reconnaissance, strike operations, and defense against Russian attacks. He stated, “Norwegian maritime industry is a global leader. I am pleased that these competencies can also be utilized to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom.”

The announcement was made during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the summit of Nordic and Baltic government leaders in Tallinn. The Norwegian government highlighted the importance of safe operation of the Ukrainian maritime corridor in the Black Sea for both Ukraine’s economy and global food security.

As part of the Norwegian-Ukrainian industrial cooperation, the development of surface maritime drones is ongoing, aimed at protecting civilian shipping and trade routes. Norway and the United Kingdom have been leading a maritime coalition to support Ukraine since its establishment in 2023. The Norwegian government reiterated its commitment to leveraging its maritime industry to bolster Ukraine’s capabilities at sea.

According to the plan, vessel number 200 is expected to be delivered by the end of the year. The unmanned platforms can be equipped with sensors, weaponry, or aerial drones depending on the assigned tasks. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik noted that this collaboration not only aids Ukraine but also provides valuable experience to Norwegian military forces in the use of unmanned maritime systems.

Norway's recent funding initiative aims to enhance Ukraine's maritime defense through the development and procurement of drones. This collaboration underscores the strategic importance of maritime security in the Black Sea region.
