On May 7, Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet with Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Pope Francis in Rome. The following day, he will hold discussions with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.
This visit is seen as an effort to ‘reset’ relations between the United States and Italy, following a series of public comments from former President Donald Trump that have heightened tensions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government.
Trump’s remarks have included criticism of Pope Francis, whom he labeled as ‘weak on crime’ and questioned his foreign policy stance. This has added to the strain in US-Italy relations.
In April, Trump publicly criticized Meloni for her refusal to support a US operation against Iran, expressing shock at her stance. He stated, ‘I thought she had courage, I was mistaken.’
Reports also emerged in late March indicating that Italy had closed its airspace to American aircraft potentially involved in strikes against Iran. This situation has marked a significant deterioration in relations between the two leaders, despite Meloni previously being viewed as a key ally of Trump in Europe.
In response to the criticism, Meloni asserted that ‘courage is about telling friends the truth’ and acting in the best interests of her country and Europe.
Marco Rubio's upcoming meetings in Rome aim to address escalating tensions between the US and Italy, particularly following controversial remarks from Donald Trump. The discussions with Vatican and Italian officials highlight a significant shift in diplomatic relations.
