The Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Kęstutis Budrys, has expressed that Russia should be more concerned about NATO’s response rather than viewing the Kaliningrad region as a secure stronghold. He emphasized that the military capabilities Russia has established in Kaliningrad, including air defense systems and missile complexes, should not be underestimated by the Alliance.
Budrys stated, “We must demonstrate to the Russians that we are capable of breaching their small fortress in Kaliningrad.” His comments underscore the need for a deterrent strategy that would dissuade Russia from pursuing aggressive actions against NATO member states.
He further asserted that NATO possesses the necessary resources to neutralize Russian air defense and missile installations in the region if required. This capability is critical for maintaining security within the Alliance.
Moreover, Budrys cautioned that Europe should not underestimate the risks associated with a potential conflict with Russia. He warned that a failure in deterrence could have widespread repercussions, affecting not only the eastern flank of NATO but all of Europe.
“The belief that a conflict with Moscow would only impact its immediate neighbors is a dangerous misconception. This narrative is part of Russian propaganda. If the frontline collapses, the entire structure will crumble—EU stability, economic systems, and social order,” he remarked.
Budrys concluded by stressing that European nations must enhance their defense capabilities and reassess their security strategies, especially if the United States reduces its protective role in Europe.
