The upcoming G7 summit, scheduled from June 15 to 17 in Évian, France, will include U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The leaders will discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine during the first working session of the summit.
According to a senior U.S. administration official, a primary objective for European leaders is to establish a unified stance on supporting Ukraine. Currently, Europe is the main provider of military and financial assistance to Ukraine, following the cessation of direct military aid from the U.S. However, European nations have largely been excluded from the peace negotiation process.
The Élysée Palace has indicated that a key goal of the meeting will be to determine the conditions under which G7 partners can encourage dialogue between Ukraine and Russia. “It is crucial to reach an agreement on the parameters or conditions of this dialogue, particularly regarding territorial issues,” emphasized the French presidential administration.
European leaders also plan to highlight the inappropriateness of lifting sanctions against Russia at this stage. In addition to the situation in Ukraine, discussions will cover the Middle East and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
French President Emmanuel Macron invited Zelensky to the G7 summit to restore consensus within the G7 regarding support for Ukraine. Macron hinted at existing differences with Trump, particularly concerning the parameters for future peace negotiations.
Trump has confirmed his intention to attend the meeting in Évian amid significant disagreements between Washington and key allies over trade tensions and the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran, which most European nations have declined to support militarily.
As the White House has shifted its focus toward the Middle East, EU leaders have expressed their readiness to take a leading role in negotiations aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. Given that earlier efforts by Trump’s special representatives yielded minimal results, European countries, which have become the primary financial and military supporters of Kyiv, are seeking to take the initiative in conflict resolution.
The G7 summit in Évian will focus on the Ukraine conflict, with discussions aimed at unifying support for Ukraine among leaders, including U.S. President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky. European leaders are poised to assert their role in facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
