Disagreements Emerge Between Ukraine’s Defense Minister and Armed Forces Chief

Recent discussions have revealed differences between Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi. This information was shared during an interview with Fedorov, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.

Fedorov noted that prior to the interview, a joint meeting took place involving brigade commanders and military leaders, where they discussed upcoming changes within the armed forces. He emphasized that both he and Syrskyi are aligned in their commitment to Ukraine’s defense.

“He is the commander of the Ukrainian army, which is fighting for independence. There can be no other relationship. We are on the same team – the team of Ukraine, the team of the president,”

Fedorov stated. However, he acknowledged that significant decisions often lead to intense discussions and differing viewpoints between the two leaders, particularly regarding financial support and the allocation of resources for military units.

As an example, Fedorov cited the initiative aimed at establishing a predictable monthly supply for brigades. Instead of a swift approval process that could take a week, the negotiation of details has been prolonged over several months, sometimes resulting in emotional responses.

“We can have intense discussions regarding certain decisions. There are basic level issues… Sometimes emotions come into play. We are still synchronizing,”

he explained. The minister added that such processes are normal for managing a complex structure like the military.

It is worth noting that previous reports from RBC-Ukraine indicated rising tensions around Fedorov, suggesting that his relationship with President Zelensky has cooled. Sources have pointed out that friction exists between Fedorov and Syrskyi due to the Defense Ministry’s attempts to encroach on the powers of the General Staff and the Armed Forces. Additionally, their perspectives on conducting the war do not fully align.

Tensions have surfaced between Ukraine's Defense Minister and the Armed Forces Chief, highlighting disagreements over military resource allocation and operational strategies. Both leaders affirm their commitment to Ukraine's defense despite these differences.
