In the coming three to five years, the conflict in Ukraine is expected to evolve into a new phase characterized by integrated operational systems, according to officials from the Defense AI Center of the Ministry of Defense. The primary objective is to unify drones, robots, and intelligence data into a cohesive digital network.
This information was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing an interview with Danilo Tsvyok, the head of the Defense AI Center, conducted by the media agency Reuters.
According to Tsvyok, the Ukrainian military is already utilizing artificial intelligence technologies on the battlefield. Neural networks assist in piloting drones, planning combat operations, and analyzing data related to Russian missile attacks.
Currently, both sides are deploying thousands of drones daily, while Ukraine is also incorporating ground robots to mitigate personnel shortages at the front lines.
However, Tsvyok emphasized that the Ministry of Defense aims to reach a new level of operational capability. Instead of relying on separate programs, a unified operational system is being developed. This system is intended to connect weaponry and information flows along the entire front line.
AI will gather data and provide immediate solutions for both individual soldiers in the trenches and strategic command. The side that can collect and process more information more rapidly is expected to gain the upper hand in the conflict.
The development of military AI has sparked a significant technological race. Russia is also enhancing its digital capabilities, increasingly employing AI algorithms to plan mass missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities, thereby reducing preparation time for each attack.
To outpace the adversary, Ukraine is collaborating with foreign technology companies. Some, such as the American firm Palantir, have already provided their systems for testing in real combat conditions.
Additionally, Kyiv has launched the Brave1 Dataroom project, a dedicated platform where allied nations can access combat data for training and software improvement.
Beyond combat applications, the Ministry of Defense plans to digitize internal processes as well. Currently, the ministry is developing an AI-based HR system aimed at reforming recruitment and personnel management within the public sector.
The main challenge for the future remains the speed of decision-making. At present, Ukraine adheres to the principle that final decisions during combat always rest with human operators.
However, experts acknowledge that over time, AI systems may begin to outpace human reaction times, and the presence of an operator could slow down processes. Consequently, the military will need to adapt to keep pace with decisions generated by autonomous systems.
