The G7 summit is underway in Évian, France, from June 15 to 17, bringing together leaders to discuss pressing global issues. Key topics include peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and the situation surrounding Iran, particularly the recent agreement with the United States and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to participate in a working session on June 16. Prior to the summit, he held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, where they agreed to meet during the event.
Trump has arrived near Évian and is heading to the Royal Hotel, the summit venue. Other leaders from the G7 have also begun arriving, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, both of whom were seen at the Geneva airport.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife Diana Fox Carney were also spotted arriving in Évian. Following Trump’s arrival, he is expected to have a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron before joining other leaders for an official reception and working dinner.
Macron outlined the summit’s main themes, emphasizing global imbalances and international crises. He stated, “We will certainly discuss Ukraine and welcome President Zelensky to reaffirm our support for Ukraine, its energy infrastructure, and its defense efforts. We will also work on creating conditions for negotiations that could lead to lasting peace.”
Another significant topic will be the situation in Iran, including the U.S.-Tehran agreement and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Egypt and Gulf nations, including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, will also be part of the discussions.
Macron mentioned that the summit will produce several documents addressing critical minerals, rare earth metals, international trade, health care, and issues like drug trafficking and migration.
