The United States has initiated discussions with Ukraine regarding the potential easing of sanctions on Belarusian potash exports, a significant source of revenue for the regime of Alexander Lukashenko. This proposal comes in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Belarusian potash fertilizers were a major export for the country until 2022, contributing substantially to its economy. In response to Belarus’s support for Russia’s actions, both the European Union and the United States imposed restrictive measures targeting Belarusian exports, including fertilizers.
US officials believe that a partial easing of sanctions could influence Belarus’s foreign policy orientation. The aim is to foster improved relations between Belarus and Western nations, thereby reducing its reliance on Russia.
It is important to note that the discussions do not suggest a complete removal of sanctions but rather targeted adjustments to the sanctions regime concerning this critical export sector.
In a related context, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that there are five potential scenarios for the escalation of military actions in the Chernihiv-Kyiv direction. He emphasized that Ukraine is taking these risks into account and plans to bolster its military presence in response to potential threats.
Furthermore, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has assessed that Russia’s current nuclear exercises are intended to demonstrate strength to Ukraine’s allies, potentially exerting pressure on them. Analysts suggest that this maneuver may also serve to divert attention from Russia’s setbacks on the front lines.
The US is considering discussions with Ukraine to potentially ease sanctions on Belarusian potash exports, aiming to shift Belarus's foreign policy. This comes amid ongoing military tensions in the region, with Ukraine preparing for possible escalations.
