The NATO alliance is closely observing Russia’s recent nuclear exercises, as confirmed by Secretary General Mark Rutte on May 20. His remarks came in response to inquiries from journalists about the drills and the potential for Russia to deploy nuclear weapons in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Rutte emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “They (Russia) know that if this happens, the response will be devastating.” He assured that NATO is actively monitoring the developments surrounding these military exercises.
On May 18, Belarus initiated joint nuclear drills with Russian forces, according to the country’s Ministry of Defense. These exercises aim to assess the readiness of Belarusian troops and the operational organization for combat deployment from unplanned locations.
Following this, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that from May 19 to May 21, Russian armed forces would conduct training focused on the preparation and potential use of nuclear capabilities in response to perceived aggression.
The American Institute for the Study of War has suggested that Russia’s unannounced strategic nuclear drills serve to project power against Ukraine’s allies while diverting attention from its vulnerabilities on the battlefield.
In light of these developments, Kyiv has criticized the joint Russian-Belarusian nuclear exercises, calling for a strong response from the international community.
NATO is actively monitoring Russian nuclear exercises, with Secretary General Mark Rutte warning of severe repercussions should nuclear weapons be used. The drills, conducted in conjunction with Belarus, are seen as a demonstration of military readiness amid ongoing tensions in Ukraine.
